CHAPTER 13

The final preparation for removal took three years, and the rescue was done in three hours. No one on the collection teams knew when they might receive the command. All units were expected to be moving on the ground within thirty minutes of receiving orders. Failure was not acceptable; so many lives depended on their performance. Our most elite soldiers trained to survive the danger and possible complications.

We practiced, sometimes with actual human removals. We stopped doing that midway through the preparation; returning them was too complicated. We learned that particular lesson from over a half-century before. Returns were most likely damaged, if not physically, certainly mentally.

We thought we were ready, but there were obstacles we had not considered. Teams collected as many humans as possible with losses resulting on both sides. Chaos engulfed the planet during the last hour, and countries used several methods of deadly warfare. These extreme tactics left the rescue mission vulnerable to the madness of these warring Earth nations. Most casualties could be explained, but others were speculation. We have verified that some humans killed Atum attempting rescues. Those humans were released, being unsuitable specimens for the program.

These instances were not the first time our people had been victims of humans’ murderous tendencies. Throughout history, we’ve suffered many acts of cruelty from governments of Earth who knew of our existence.

However, no matter the past, we look toward the future. We risked Atum lives, securing our safety and civilization. For those who side with the human realm, we give them this analogy. Does human man regret destroying an anthill when he builds a house where a colony has settled? An ant is insignificant to a human. Man does not consider its feelings or welfare because they do not exist on the same evolutionary level. So what is our deterrent? A human represents the same insignificance to us as the ant does to him. Why should we not take this planet? We are far more evolved than humans. No, we cannot consider their feelings or well-being because, in the universe, humans are unimportant.

We are not barbaric. In the interest of science, we will preserve the species. We will live on this planet, but it will be their colony we step on and destroy. It will be their lives we control at our discretion.

However, we will show more mercy for humans than they have ever shown their inferiors.
